Health & Safety Policy and Practices

Implemented: May 2024  Revised: December 2024

Wicked Welly Farm & Apiary (WWFA) is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and healthy workplace and learning environment for all employees, volunteers, visitors, and contractors. We are committed to preventing occupational illness and injury in the workplace, continually improving health and safety practices and performance in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant codes, standards, and practices.

Practices

Our practices are designed and implemented to provide a safe and healthy work environment. Safety practices will cover:

  • Training on Farm Safety Basics, including:

  • Recognizing and reporting unsafe work practices

  • Heat stress and sun safety: stretching, hydrating, eating enough and often

  • Handling hazardous materials

  • Working with animals and livestock

  • Safe use of farm equipment and machinery (with specific training provided for any equipment employees operate)

  • Slips, trips, and falls

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided with proper training on how to wear, use, and maintain your PPE effectively. Proper work wear includes close-toed shoes, sunscreen, a hat that properly protects you from the sun, layers (pants and long sleeves to protect from ticks and brush).

  • Emergency Procedures in case of accidents, injuries, fires, or other unforeseen situations. This includes knowing first-aid basics, evacuation routes, and how to report emergencies.

  • The Internal Responsibility System (IRS) including the employee’s Right to Refuse Unsafe Work. Employees will be trained on their responsibilities to ensure a safe and healthy workplace.

  • Working Together for a Safe Farm: Employees will be trained on open communication expectations and practices that prioritize efficiency and safety. This includes quickly notifying management when there are safety concerns that could impact people or animals alike.

  • Safe Food Handling practices: Employees will be trained on how to safely harvest, wash and pack produce to ensure any products people consume will be safe.
